The #1 Question I Ask my Clients

client success

As health coaches, our priority is client success.

Because we are so excited about sharing our knowledge, we can sometimes forget a key first step that makes all the difference in whether our clients feel successful in working with us or not. (And it has nothing to do with how much we know about nutrition.)

That step is getting a shared understanding of what is meant by client success.

There are lots of different ways to approach this, but I like to keep things simple and clear. I find out what my clients REALLY want by asking this:

"How will you know?"

Asking "how will you know?" is vital because it helps your client get really clear on what it is they want to achieve. Most of us have vague ideas of what success will be like for us. But digging deep to get to concrete, tangible outcomes gives both you and your clients what's called "evidence of success."

Example of how I use this:

Health Coaching Client: I want to feel better.

Me: How will you know when you feel better?

Health Coaching Client: I'll know I'm feeling better when I'm sleeping more and when I have enough energy that I'm not relying on caffeine to get through the afternoon.

COACHING TIP: This is a great answer because there are two tangible results you can work toward, and can check on in a few weeks: sleeping more (how much more?) and not drinking caffeine in the afternoon. When your client is achieving these things, that's "evidence of success," which they will unconsciously credit to working with you.

Asking "how will you know?" is a great way to start the conversation about what signs of success are truly valuable to your clients. And don't forget: successful clients are happy clients. And they are more likely to refer their friends and family to you!
